In the late 1980s, Scott Rench began experimenting with putting images on clay. While at Edinboro University, a torn piece of silkscreen fabric sparked an idea: “What if I could screen print glazes directly onto clay?” After trial and error, he developed a technique no one else was using.

UK artist Paul Scott discovered Scott’s work in an AMACO Ceramics ad and helped bring it to the international stage. Together, they grew a movement that reshaped ceramics.

Today, books and workshops teach these techniques. Scott’s work has been shown with artists like Picasso, Cindy Sherman, and Roy Lichtenstein at institutions such as the Royal Academy and Art Basel. In his words, this page is “The Museum of Me,” a look back at a chapter that changed ceramic art. For more, see Paul Scott’s books Ceramics and Print or Painted Clay, which detail the history and techniques of imagery on clay.
